For Educators

Break up the monotony of the classroom with a field trip to (or visit from) William King Museum of Art! No matter your curriculum goals, WKMA’s Education Department can tailor a museum experience to suit your needs and is sure to leave a lasting impression on your students. We also offer workshops and resources for teachers of any subject that will enhance in-service hours and student learning.

VanGogh Outreach
Since 1998, our award-winning VanGogh Outreach program has provided SOL-based programming to assist classroom teachers in bringing their curriculum to life. By presenting material in multiple ways, the program works as an introduction to or reinforcement of classroom content that is accessible to a variety of learning styles.
Heritage Express

History comes alive with Heritage Express, a companion to our award-winning VanGogh Outreach program. This museum experience immerses students in the history of the Great Road and the early pioneering spirit that brought settlers to the mountains of Southwest Virginia and Northeast Tennessee. It includes a close examination of objects made in the region in those earliest days of settlement.

Student Groups

WKMA’s most popular and most customizable tour option, Tour Plus for students is a guided tour of all the Museum’s galleries PLUS a hands-on art activity inspired by a specific topic or exhibition. Tour Plus can be tailored to suit students of any age in public, private, or homeschool settings, pre-K through 12th grade.

Resources

Our partner institution, the Virginia Museum of Fine Art, provides us with a collection of structured activities that can be used in classrooms and applied to artistic learning for students. These activities are a wonderful resource for teachers looking to incorporate art into their classroom curriculum.

Art Enrichment

William King Museum of Art brings the fun (and the art) to you with our customized art enrichment program. Our education staff works closely with you to design an art-making experience perfect for schools or public audiences. Offerings include supplemental SOL-based art program for schools and homeschool organizations, art programs for students in after-school care, and special event art.

Teacher Workshops

Brighten up your in-service hours with a workshop at William King Museum of Art! These workshops aren’t just for art instructors — they are designed to help teachers of any subject matter find new and creative ways to use art to enhance core curricula. We also offer more in-depth, technique-focused in-service opportunities for art teachers. Workshops on art education are available to public, private, and homeschool instructors.
