Art Lab

WKMA’s Art Lab is a hub for learning where artists, makers, students, educators, and the public can connect, exchange knowledge, explore ideas, and hone their skills.

Equipped with printmaking, clay, and mixed media studios; a darkroom; a digital lab; a lecture space; and a community gallery, it’s a space where critical thinking is engaged, curiosity is sparked, and creativity flourishes. It’s a place for examining the rich diversity of our world through the lenses of art, craft, and technology and home to a variety of resident artists working across media.

Art Lab also provides enrichment experiences for visiting high school groups as well as classes, workshops, and internships for our educational partners, Emory & Henry College, Virginia Highlands Community College, and the College for Older Adults.
Studio Art

William King’s Art Lab offers open studios where artists can create studio art such as ceramics, printmaking, drawing, painting, mixed-media, and darkroom photography. If you’ve been trained on the equipment, you’re welcome to come in and work on your projects.

Studio session times include setup and cleanup, so users must plan accordingly. All participants must be trained on any equipment used and are responsible for their own expendable art supplies (clay is available for purchase).

To use our clay studio, we charge an additional separate cost of $40 per fire to use the kiln. Art Lab does not offer kiln rental for works made outside of our facilities. All works fired must be made with clay purchased from or approved by Art Lab.

To discuss the possibility of piggybacking a firing with a few small pieces in the kiln, or to reserve a day slot, schedule a studio training and orientation session, or set up an interview to apply to be a volunteer monitor, call 276.628.5005, ext. 123 or email asalyer@wkmuseum.org

Reservations are required 48 hours in advance.
