The Art of Advertisement: Art Nouveau Posters of the Late 19th Century

April 25, 2024
through October 27, 2024

In light of the current power uncertainties and in an effort to prioritize the safety of the artwork, we regret to announce the immediate closure of both the Art Nouveau exhibit and the Benjamin Wigfall exhibit.

This selection from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts’ collection of Art Nouveau posters highlights the late 19th-century design style, which emphasized beauty in natural forms and movement and was often expressed through flowing, stylized lines and flourishing patterns. The French, Belgian, Viennese, Italian, and American posters on view include works designed by Jules Chéret, Théophile Alexandre Steinlen, Manuel Orazi, Josef Maria Auchentaller, and others. This exhibition was organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Members’ Reception: Wednesday, April 24th, 5:30-7:30 p.m. with special talk from exhibition curator, Madeleine E. Dugan.

This exhibition was organized by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.
