Her art is deeply informed by her 8 years as a live music painter\, teaching yoga and meditation\, and time spent as a wilderness therapy field guide\, and answering crisis/suicide hotline calls\, with her formal background in Psychology from The College of William and Mary. She was awarded a scholarship and studio assistantship at the Penland School of Craft in 2015\, is a frequent instructor of wet felting and needle felting at Earthskills Gatherings throughout the Southeast\, and from 2022 to 2025\, she served as a full-time public school art teacher. With painting names like “there is nothing that cannot be transformed into joy\,” her current studio practice centers create action-painted abstracts that serve as victory cries (and sometimes desperate pleas) for emotional integration and personal transformation. We’ll supply an assortment of found objects to compliment or contrast anything you bring from home! Combine them with a variety of wire\, adhesives\, and air-dry clay to build something beautiful or just kitschy and strange! \nFor an extra twist\, you can opt into our item lottery: draw a few mystery objects at random and challenge yourself to work them into your piece. He owned and operated Mikey Burns Things\, a commission-based studio for pyrography and sculpture\, and has a particular affinity for character creation\, having studied film and stop-motion animation and applied that knowledge to designing and building sculpted characters. \nMichael holds an MFA in Theatre from Ohio University and a BA from Western Oregon University\, and brings additional experience as a writer\, director\, and performer\, including a role as Artistic Director of Barter Youth Academy at Barter Theatre\, and as owner/operator of Appalachian Performing Arts Academy. That background in performance and timing informs how he approaches character\, form\, and storytelling in his sculptural work. \nAt the Art Lab\, Michael draws on this range of experience to help students build technical skill and find their own voice in sculpture and pyrography. DESCRIPTION:Color Theory: Harmonious Hues  \nStudents will apply color schemes to a character design to evoke specific moods. \n  \n  \n9:30–11:00 AM: ages 14–16+ \n11:00 AM–12:30 PM: ages 10–13 \n2:00–3:30 PM: ages 7–9 \n  \nThis series of youth art classes is designed to provide homeschooling students with affordable\, quality\, and fun arts education. Classes will meet once a week on Wednesdays from September through April. All classes can be taken individually but\, when taken consecutively\, provide a complete curriculum of fine arts knowledge and techniques. Students who participate in any Homeschool Art classes have the option to submit work to the Homeschool Art Student Exhibition that will be on display in the children’s wing of the museum from April to May. \nProjects in the first semester (September-December) will be based on the fundamentals of art \nThe registration fee is $10 per class.* All supplies are included. \nDue to the demand for the program\, we are going to cap the registration at 15 students per class to ensure that all students are getting the time and attention that they deserve\, and to guarantee that our classrooms can provide the necessary space. The 7-9 age group will be capped at 10 students to meet their current needs. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Class Title: Wildlife Illustration & Nature Journaling (Winter edition) \nInstructor: Jen Otey \nCost: $40 \nTime and date(s): Saturday\, December 12 from 10:00AM-1:00PM \nLocation: Art Lab \nSkill level: Any \nAudience: Teen-Adult \nJoin artist Jen Otey to learn tips\, tricks\, and creative approaches to documenting your time in nature through wildlife illustration and nature journaling. Jen will demonstrate ways to revisit favorite places and observe plants and animals throughout the seasons\, creating a visual record that is both meaningful and enjoyable. Through drawing exercises\, texture studies\, and creative prompts\, participants will explore techniques for observing and capturing the natural world. Weather permitting\, the class will venture onto the museum grounds for on-site sketching; otherwise\, participants will work indoors using natural objects as inspiration. No prior art experience is\nnecessary— this workshop is open to everyone. Bring a sketchbook and few basic sketching supplies (Art Lab will also have plenty of materials to share)\, and a sense of wonder. \n  \nAbout Jen Otey: \n \nI am a neo-Appalachian artist\, inspired by the culture and the natural environment of the Central Appalachian Mountains of Southwest Virginia. The birds\, bears\, turtles\, cottontails\, deer\, insects\, and salamanders\, as well as the multitude of mushrooms and wildflowers are what give this place\, I call home\, its own special kind of magic and influence my work the most. I grew up in a family focused on maintaining traditional mountain foodways. I have continued that focus in my own home through gardening\, foraging\, and the preservation of what we grow and wild harvest. Most of the work I produce has been inspired by my solo treks along the trails throughout the region where I live\, during every season. What I see\, feel\, and experience during my interactions with native flora and fauna and in my garden is reflected in paint and clay. The work I produce is a way to share that experience with others\, as they welcome the forest and the garden into their home. The paintings and drawings I am currently creating are illustrative pen and ink with watercolor. These pieces often tell a story about a day I experienced in the forest and fields around the region where I live. \n

DESCRIPTION:Seasonal: Winter Crafting  \nStudents will create various winter themed ornaments and crafts \n  \n  \n9:30–11:00 AM: ages 14–16+ \n11:00 AM–12:30 PM: ages 10–13 \n2:00–3:30 PM: ages 7–9 \n  \nThis series of youth art classes is designed to provide homeschooling students with affordable\, quality\, and fun arts education. Classes will meet once a week on Wednesdays from September through April. All classes can be taken individually but\, when taken consecutively\, provide a complete curriculum of fine arts knowledge and techniques. Students who participate in any Homeschool Art classes have the option to submit work to the Homeschool Art Student Exhibition that will be on display in the children’s wing of the museum from April to May. \nProjects in the first semester (September-December) will be based on the fundamentals of art \nThe registration fee is $10 per class.* All supplies are included. \nDue to the demand for the program\, we are going to cap the registration at 15 students per class to ensure that all students are getting the time and attention that they deserve\, and to guarantee that our classrooms can provide the necessary space. The 7-9 age group will be capped at 10 students to meet their current needs. \n  \n  \n

Winter solstice is upon us; it’s time to welcome the return of the light. Create a decorative clay object to hold your positive affirmations for the new season. You’ll also have the opportunity to release in writing anything that no longer serves you\, which will burn away in the pottery firing process. All supplies included. Return after Christmas to retrieve your fired pottery piece. Only town for the holiday? The finished piece can be shipped to you for an additional fee. Registration for $5 classes opens one month before the start of each class and closes one week before the start date. Most supplies are included unless specifically noted. \n  \nThis class: \nClass Title: Sticks and Stones (Nature Sculpture) \nDate/Time Saturday\, January 16th 1:00PM-5:00PM \nCost: $40.00 \nLocation: Art Lab’s 3D Lab \nSkill level: Any \nAudience: 12-adult \nDescription: \nStep outside\, gather what the world’s already made\, and turn it into something new. We’ll kick things off with a short nature walk around the museum grounds\, where you’ll collect sticks\, twigs\, leaves\, pebbles\, and stones to use in your sculpture. We’ll also provide a selection of natural materials if you’d rather skip the scavenger hunt\,  or bring your own from home if you’ve already got a favorite piece of driftwood or a rock you can’t put down. \n  \nBack in the studio\, you’ll combine your finds with clay\, wire\, and glue to build a sculpture rooted in the natural world — literally. Whether you go abstract\, whimsical\, or true-to-nature\, the materials are yours to shape. He owned and operated Mikey Burns Things\, a commission-based studio for pyrography and sculpture\, and has a particular affinity for character creation\, having studied film and stop-motion animation and applied that knowledge to designing and building sculpted characters. \nMichael holds an MFA in Theatre from Ohio University and a BA from Western Oregon University\, and brings additional experience as a writer\, director\, and performer\, including a role as Artistic Director of Barter Youth Academy at Barter Theatre\, and as owner/operator of Appalachian Performing Arts Academy. That background in performance and timing informs how he approaches character\, form\, and storytelling in his sculptural work. \nAt the Art Lab\, Michael draws on this range of experience to help students build technical skill and find their own voice in sculpture and pyrography. He lives with his two cats\, Chetney and Zeke\, surrounded by sculptures and pyrography pieces\, in a house that always smells vaguely like a campfire.

In this class\, you’ll sculpt your very own character face\, inspired by the expressive\, larger-than-life style of stop-motion and animated films (such as Coraline\, Nightmare Before Christmas\, Wallace & Gromit). We’re not talking realistic portraits. We mean big eyes\, exaggerated features\, and faces that leap out at you with personality. \nYou’ll learn just enough real facial anatomy to know which rules to break (and why it works). You’ll be sculpting a face of pure emotion: Giddy\, grumpy\, heart-broken\, love-struck\, you name it.
