SUMMARY:Tours at Two with Lynn Earnest
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, February 6th\, “The Soul Within: ‘They Draw Me In\, I Draw Them Out’ The Work of Lynn Earnest” officially opens\, with a public tour with Lynn at 2pm\, 3rd floor United Company Contemporary Regional Gallery. \nPlease register by emailing RSVP@wkmuseum.org \nLynn Earnest is a contemporary\, Appalachian\, draftswoman who weaves together history\, art\, and the essence of place. Similar to a mathematical proof\, Earnest leaves the history of her mark making\, thereby allowing the audience to see how she has arrived at a particular conclusion. For several years\, Earnest has been researching the 1908 Messina earthquake which struck in the Strait of Messina between Sicily and Calabria\, on December 28\, 1908\, causing a devastating tsunami–it is considered the most destructive earthquake to ever hit Europe. Earnest draws the still visible aftermath of this earth-shattering event by capturing the old architectural structures in Calabria\, Italy. As a child\, Earnest recalls the story of the earthquake being recounted to her by her Italian grandparents. Earnest notes\, “The area [Calabria] is renowned for its beauty and\, hopefully\, the inspiration for this villa series of drawings will move those who see them to catch a glimpse of a style of life which celebrates the best of its people\, its land and its spirit.” Through these drawings\, Lynn Earnest weaves together the past and present by exploring her early American ancestry and her Italian heritage within the region. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Reception for "100 Days of Flowers: The Art of Debbie Griffin"
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday\, March 22nd from 2pm-4pm\, in the 3rd Floor Panoramic Gallery for a reception to celebrate the exhibit opening of “100 Days of Flowers: The Art of Debbie Griffin.”\nRSVP: rsvp@wkmuseum.org\n\nDebbie Griffin spent her professional career as an educator: first as a teacher for the deaf\, then as an assistant principal\, and later as a college professor at the University of South Florida in Sarasota. Advocating for the rights of individuals with special needs and limited communication skills has always been her passion.\nAs a child\, Griffin enjoyed wandering through the park located across from her modest row house in the gritty city of Philadelphia. There\, she spent many hours picking flowers\, planting seeds\, and nurturing plants.\n\nWhile living in Florida during the pandemic\, she decided to paint flowers for 100 days with the objective of exploring their botanical composition. Over time\, her drawings became more whimsical. She began gathering and pressing flowers\, preserving them between beveled panes of glass to create miniature bouquets. In 2022\, she completed a 15-panel piece consisting of these miniature bouquets titled Flora-Bunda\, which was selected for a six-month exhibition\, Florida in Transformation\, at the Imagine Museum in St. Petersburg\, Florida.\nIn 2022\, Debbie relocated to Johnson City\, Tennessee\, to be closer to her daughter and her family. The theme of “100 Days of Flowers” continued to expand as she incorporated her floral designs into enameled jewelry\, unique embroidered pieces\, and mosaics.\n\nDebbie is the founder and co-owner of the Griffin Art Gallery in Jonesborough\, Tennessee\, where her work is also exhibited.
