Here is your opportunity to get a glimpse into the world of darkroom film photography and alternative processes. \n\nTake advantage of the last of the summer sun to make beautiful cyanotypes on paper! One of the oldest photographic techniques\, cyanotypes involve coating paper with a light-sensitive emulsion and laying objects or transparencies on the paper\, then exposing them using the sun. After a water rinse\, cyanotypes develop into a deep blue and white print. \nAll supplies will be provided.  \nMorgan Ford is a Fine Art Photographer specializing in B&W Medium Format Photography. Morgan’s  love of art & photography started at a very young age with a sketchbook always in hand\, she took her first photography class in highschool and fell in love with the process of light and catching brief moments in time.  Morgan studied at Brooks Institute of Photography and went on to work in advertising in San Francisco after college. After leaving California and advertising behind she resumed her passion for film photography and working in the darkroom. Morgan has had exhibits all over the country showing her Fine Art B&W Photography of beautiful countrysides\, wild horses\, and dilapidated buildings. She currently resides in Abingdon\, VA and has an art gallery on Main St. where she represents regional artists.

Classes will meet once a week on Wednesdays from September through April. All classes can be taken individually but\, when taken consecutively\, provide a complete curriculum of fine arts knowledge and techniques. Here is your opportunity to get a glimpse into the world of darkroom film photography and alternative processes. \n\nGet to Know Your Film Camera introduces students to the basics of shooting with a 35mm film camera. The first part of the class will be spent going over basic camera use and shooting a roll of Black & White film on the Museum campus. You’ll learn how to load film in your camera\, receive tips for shooting manually\, and receive 1 on 1 time with the instructor to ask any questions. The second part of the class will be developing your roll of film. \nMorgan Ford is a Fine Art Photographer specializing in B&W Medium Format Photography. Morgan’s  love of art & photography started at a very young age with a sketchbook always in hand\, she took her first photography class in highschool and fell in love with the process of light and catching brief moments in time. Morgan studied at Brooks Institute of Photography and went on to work in advertising in San Francisco after college. After leaving California and advertising behind she resumed her passion for film photography and working in the darkroom. DESCRIPTION:Portraits: Introduction to Drawing Faces  \nBy the end of this lesson\, students will be able to draw a human face using basic proportional guidelines (eyes in the middle\, features in the correct spots). They will be able to define “value” as the lightness or darkness of a color (or pencil stroke). They will demonstrate how to create at least three different values (light\, medium\, dark) using a pencil. DESCRIPTION:Sculpture Series with Michael Gerber \nExplore sculpture techniques with Michael through costume mask-making\, polymer clay miniatures\, found-object sculpture\, and nature-based earth sculptures. All classes are beginner friendly! Starting with a plaster-cloth based molded directly to your features\, you’ll build up dimension and then decorate with faux fur\, felting wool\, and other materials to create a completely one-of-a-kind mask for Halloween (or just for fun!) \nPlease note: Because the base materials are applied directly to the face\, some minor skin irritation is possible. He owned and operated Mikey Burns Things\, a commission-based studio for pyrography and sculpture\, and has a particular affinity for character creation\, having studied film and stop-motion animation and applied that knowledge to designing and building sculpted characters. \nMichael holds an MFA in Theatre from Ohio University and a BA from Western Oregon University\, and brings additional experience as a writer\, director\, and performer\, including a role as Artistic Director of Barter Youth Academy at Barter Theatre\, and as owner/operator of Appalachian Performing Arts Academy. That background in performance and timing informs how he approaches character\, form\, and storytelling in his sculptural work. \nAt the Art Lab\, Michael draws on this range of experience to help students build technical skill and find their own voice in sculpture and pyrography. He lives with his two cats\, Chetney and Zeke\, surrounded by sculptures and pyrography pieces\, in a house that always smells vaguely like a campfire.

DESCRIPTION:Perspective: Step Into Another World \nStudents will understand and apply the principles of one-point perspective by creating an imaginative environment that uses a horizon line\, vanishing point\, and orthogonal lines to create the illusion of depth. \n  \n  \n9:30–11:00 AM: ages 14–16+ \n11:00 AM–12:30 PM: ages 10–13 \n2:00–3:30 PM: ages 7–9 \n  \nThis series of youth art classes is designed to provide homeschooling students with affordable\, quality\, and fun arts education. Classes will meet once a week on Wednesdays from September through April. All classes can be taken individually but\, when taken consecutively\, provide a complete curriculum of fine arts knowledge and techniques. Students who participate in any Homeschool Art classes have the option to submit work to the Homeschool Art Student Exhibition that will be on display in the children’s wing of the museum from April to May. \nProjects in the first semester (September-December) will be based on the fundamentals of art \nThe registration fee is $10 per class.* All supplies are included. \nDue to the demand for the program\, we are going to cap the registration at 15 students per class to ensure that all students are getting the time and attention that they deserve\, and to guarantee that our classrooms can provide the necessary space. The 7-9 age group will be capped at 10 students to meet their current needs. \n  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Needle Felting Series with Laura Blankenship \nBefore it was co-opted for mass production\, felting had been a vital community art that provided beauty\, housing\, and clothing for nomadic tribes across Asia and Europe. Now the felting needle brings it back into the hands of the people! All classes teach the basics of this craft and are customizable to the skill level and aesthetics of the student. Expect to leave feeling empowered to take what you’ve learned to create anything you can imagine. Ages 12 through adult. She was awarded a scholarship and studio assistantship at the Penland School of Craft in 2015\, is a frequent instructor of wet felting and needle felting at Earthskills Gatherings throughout the Southeast\, and from 2022 to 2025\, she served as a full-time public school art teacher. With painting names like “there is nothing that cannot be transformed into joy\,” her current studio practice centers create action-painted abstracts that serve as victory cries (and sometimes desperate pleas) for emotional integration and personal transformation. Laura Marie Blankenship lives and works in Damascus\, Virginia\, where she continues to paint\, teach\, hike\, bike\, kayak\, share beauty\, create connection\, and ask for guidance from the trees\, trails\, and beings in and around the South Holston River. \n

Must have \nprevious wet felting experience; exemptions for experience can be \nrequested by contacting the museum.
